Re: SAF armoured vehicles(Terrex) detained in Hong Kong port

Formal reasons for detention of SAF vehicles in Hong Kong not yet provided; second meeting scheduled for today

SINGAPORE - Shipping firm APL will have a second meeting with the Hong Kong Customs and Excise Department on Thursday (Dec 1) to resolve the issue of nine Singapore infantry carrier vehicles that were seized in Hong Kong last week, said the Defence Ministry (Mindef).

Formal reasons for the detention have yet to be provided although customs officials are hopeful of completing their investigation soon, Mindef added in a statement.

Mindef said that the two parties met for seven hours on Tuesday (Nov 29) and that it has "advised APL to give its full cooperation to the Hong Kong authorities" in order to expedite the recovery of the Singapore Armed Forces' assets.

Mindef said that Hong Kong Customs have added security guards stationed 24-hours at the site housing the Terrex vehicles.

APL was transporting the vehicles to Singapore after a military exercise in Taiwan when they were seized in Hong Kong last Wednesday (Nov 23).

The SAF conducts overseas training in a dozen or so territories and hires commercial shippers to transport military equipment.

Defence Minister Ng Eng Hen had on Tuesday (Nov 29) said that it is the norm for militaries to use commercial carriers to ship equipment or vehicles for peacetime training.

As usual this forum needs my post 2 set the standards

If garbagement is asking for reasons it means the shippers isn't at fault. If their paperwork is fuck up, Hong Kong would've stated long ago

And garbagement demanding for reasons sounds like shit from that asshole who thinks he so smart, shanmugam

Even if Hong Kong give silly stoopid reasons & garbagement say their reasons invalid n they have no right to detain n demand they release the vehicles ASAP, China will say sorry. Cannot.

SO DEMAND FORMAL EXPLANATION FOR WHAT!
If garbagement want to sue they should get ready now. Really brainless

Re: SAF armoured vehicles(Terrex) detained in Hong Kong port

Hong Kong yet to clarify reasons for seizure of SAF vehicles; Beijing has been diplomatically nuanced

Angela Poh and Chang Jun Yan

Dec 06, 2016 06:00 am

Nine Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) Terrex infantry carrier vehicles, allegedly en route from Taiwan to Singapore, were seized in Hong Kong on Nov 23.

Responding to the vehicle seizure, the Chinese foreign ministry spokesman emphasised that the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region should be adhered to, and that countries which shared diplomatic relations with China should not be engaging in any form of official exchanges with Taiwan.

Hawkish commentaries followed in the Chinese media, with sensationalised headlines framing the issue as one between China and Singapore, suggesting that Singapore needed to give up its military training in Taiwan or compromise its bilateral relations with China.

Within Singapore, there has also been a significant amount of speculation and sensational hypotheses surrounding the seizure of the vehicles, which may do more harm than good.

Three common logical flaws can be identified from many of these commentaries.

The first is fundamental attribution error. Hong Kong has yet to clarify the exact reasons and legal basis of its move.

With the basis of seizure remaining ambiguous, one should not simply assume that such an action was a premeditated move by Beijing, ostensibly to threaten Singapore about conducting military training in Taiwan.

Hong Kong is, after all, one of the world's busiest ports, and this incident could very well have been caused by an administrative lapse, which is still being investigated.

China has many tools in its foreign policy toolbox.

Having Hong Kong impound SAF vehicles being carried on a commercial shipping firm cannot be the most effective measure - if it was indeed its intention to push Singapore around in the international realm, or even "drive a wedge among Singaporeans", as some online comments put it.

Misinterpreting intent, Member of Parliament Pritam Singh further referred to the Terrex incident as an "ongoing diplomatic spat" between Singapore and China.

Contrary to the allegations of some analysts that Beijing "now has a serious problem" with the SAF's training in Taiwan, official responses from China and Singapore have been relatively muted. There have not been any open accusations by either party, leaders or otherwise, much less of the headline-grabbing variety that a diplomatic quarrel would necessitate.

The SAF's training in Taiwan is not a secret. Singapore's leaders had an agreement with their Chinese counterparts on the need for the SAF to continue with such training when the two countries established diplomatic relations in 1990.

Re: SAF armoured vehicles(Terrex) detained in Hong Kong port

My friend working in Gombak revealed that China has offered to open to SAF several areas of PRC for use as training ground. These areas are several times the size of Singapore and can be used for live firing as well. They only ask that SAF to stop training in Taiwan if they want to accept China's offer.

Since the SAF already conducts joint training exercises with the PLA, China sees their offer as a step up in their defence relationship and co-operation.

Now Trump shows tough stance against PRC by phone call with Taiwan president n berating PRC on Twitter, this Terrex saga may not end so easily.

Xi Jing Ping can't weakness. So PRC may soon snatch some more south/central America countries from Taiwan by establishing formal ties with them. These countries are eager to suck up to China n ditch Taiwan.

Also PRC may demand strongly that Singapore leaves Taiwan training ground for good, if not face more harassment in the future.

Singapore leaders got to be wise in their course of action n not screw up.

The writer is amateurish.

China government is the one calling the shot behind the scene. Hong Kong is used as the front to tekan Singapore.

Singapore government knows they need to "talk" to PRC leaders to resolve this matter.

But PRC leaders coolly 在耍太极, telling Singapore to deal with Hong Kong SAR government, which of course will drag for a long period n yet probably without any outcome.
